drone. we're hearing it happened last week. barbara starr is at the pentagon for us with this exclusive report. barbara, tell us what you know. >> reporter: new military tensions now with iran. cnn has learned it was last thursday just one week ago that two iranian su-25, old russian fighter jets they operate flew out in to the persian gulf in to international air space and fired on a u.s. air force predator drone, an unmanned drone in international air space that the pentagon insists conducting routine all toe classified maritime surveillance. the iranian air force hit the drone. the drone was able to return to base in that region. but this does raise some serious new tensions with iran. it was, of course, just a few days before the presidential election. here in the united states. officials that we have talked to confirming it after we questioned them say they just don't know at this point what the iranians were up to. just out to cause trouble or trying to bring down that u.s. drone, brooke. >> this is clearly raising tensions as you point out. could this be considered an act of war?

. iranian warplanes opening fire an unarmed u.s. drone? the pentagon said it was flying over the gulf. that international waters. fortunately the drone was not damaged. jon: all this as the you know announce as fresh round of new diplomatic talks with iran next month. national security correspondent jennifer griffin live at the pentagon with more on this. this happened november 1st. why are we hearing about it now? >> reporter: that is a good question, jon. i don't have the impression that the pentagon wanted to talk about the incident. reporters were getting wind about the incident. were asking questions about and that's when we heard officially from pentagon spokesman george little. >> it will come up here that the white house might have asked you to muzzle this incident before the election. did the white house give you any guidance whether or not to release information on the incident or not? >> i think said this two, three, four, five, times, now. we don't typically comment on classified surveillance missions. i will not get into discussions at the classified level that occurred b

. joining me now from the pentagon fox news national security correspondent jennifer griffin with the latest. jennifer, i know you have been working your sources on this at the pentagon and if he cia. what do we know now and when was this issue of the affair first exposed? how did it come about? >> well, the first that it was exposed in terms of the conversation with the president occurred yesterday. general petraeus went over to the white house and he told the president that he thought he should resign. but what we're now learning from sources close to the fbi is that the fbi had been investigating general petraeus and as part of a larger investigation, the name of paula broadwell, who is general petraeus' biographer. she wrote a book that came out in january called-"all in, the education of general david h. petraeus." she had spent about a year in afghanistan with him, documenting his life, and it seems that the fbi was investigating something broader. her name came up. they started investigating concern that general petraeus now head of the cia was possibly some sort of victim in it or co
faces a serious new foreign policy challenge. there's word today from the pentagon that in the closing days of the election campaign iranian jets fired on a u.s. drone. let's get the details from our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. what are you learning, barbara? >> wolf, it was last thursday just one week ago we now know two iranian russian made jets very workable flew out into the persian gulf into international air space according to the pentagon and fired at a predator drone, a u.s. air force predator drone that the pentagon says was on a routine surveillance mission. although that mission was classified. here's what the pentagon had to say about it all. >> we believe this is the first time that an unmanned aircraft has been shot at over international waters in the arabian gulf. >> is that an act of war? >> i'm not going to get into legal labels. the reality is that we have a wide range of options as i said before to protect our assets and our forces in the region and will do so when necessary. we have communicated to the iranians that we will continue to conduct surveillance

their daily lives. >> the thing that was so strange to hear today was to watch the pentagon insist to reporters that there's nothing they know of that's untoward besides flirtation revealed in the e-mails between kelley and general allen. allen has had an absolutely star crossed tenure in afghanistan. he had scandal after scandal from the bails attacks that left 16 innocents dead to the koran burnings, to images coming out of marines urinating on a dead taliban militant, and he's been able to level with a lot of us in the press about the progress not really being as rapid as he would like, and you see this happen, to have allen swept up in all of this was kind of cataclysmic at the pentagon. a lot of us went to sleep thinking it was a scandal about general petraeus, and then suddenly allen is involved in it. it was absolutely surreal. >> and richard, one of the things that happened over the years, petraeus has been glorified by the media, it is not something i felt capable of contributing to since i don't know anything about the military, never having spent a day in it, but that do

and that is the top commander in afghanistan, general john allen. turns out the pentagon is now investigating him as well for sending inappropriate e-mails to jill kelly. now, if you remember from yesterday, kelly is the same woman who sparked this whole investigation because petraeus' mistress paula broadwell was sending her e-mails. allen is saying he did nothing wrong and is maintaining his current position within the military. now, many are wondering why the fbi would get involved if this is nothing more than an affair. but we're now hearing fears of potential security leaks. in a speech at the university of denver broadwell suggested the libya attack was targeting a secret prison at the benghazi consulate. federal agents have been searching broadwell's home. late last night and into early this morning. not only did she have thousands of e-mails between her and petraeus detailing the affair. she also had classified material on her computer. as of yet the fbi doesn't believe that came from petraeus but it is illegal. more bill

the benghazi attack and when he knew it. let's get right to our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. barbara, what are you learning? >> wolf, i have just spoken to someone, a long-standing source who has spoken to david petraeus. this is someone on his level professionally. this person is directly familiar from petraeus with his thinking, with petraeus' thinking about what he will tell congress tomorrow about the benghazi attacks. david petraeus wants to tell congress that he knew almost immediately after the september 11th attacks that the group ansar al sharia, that al qaeda sympathizing group in libya was responsible for the attacks. here's how it goes. in petraeus' view there are two questions on the table. who was responsible? and that is ansar al sharia. he has intelligence he believes to back that up. second question, what was their motivation? that is where some of the confusion may lie. what this source says petraeus told him is there were about 20 intelligence reports that began to come in blaming that video -- that anti-islamic video that sparked the riots in cairo. that's the con
